In other words, it can also be said that if one rupee is spent by swiping a credit card on a point-of-sale machine, then two rupees were spent online during this period.
Online spending through credit cards is increasing day by day.
In April, the online expenditure was Rs 94,516 crore, which was 60% of the total Rs 1,56,498 crore. Similarly, in the month of July, the share of online expenditure increased to 63.4%. In August, it declined slightly and came down to 62.4%. In September, due to increased online sales, it reached 65.3%. The number of online transactions is less than physical transactions.
Although the value of online transactions has been more than the payments made at the store for some time, the number of online transactions is still less than physical transactions. In September, there were 19.8 crore transactions at the store, which is slightly more than the 19.4 crore online payments. In April, offline transactions were 18.4 crore, while online was 15.9 crore. With the increase in e-commerce sales during the festive season starting in September, online spending has also increased.
26% growth in sales of electronic items
According to an estimate by Datum Intelligence, e-commerce sales reached around $12 billion in September and October, which is 23% more than last year. This increase is due to increased sales on e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon, where sales of mobile and electronics items have seen a growth of 26%. Online card spending in quick-commerce is growing at a rate of 74% on a year-on-year basis. This is directly affecting the business of grocery stores.
The growth in online payments is also being supported by rising utility payments. In the second quarter of FY25, 62.7 crore online bill payments were made. Their total value was Rs 2,38,897 crore. In the first quarter, this figure was 45.6 crore transactions and their total amount is more than Rs 1,23,345 crore. However, this includes payments made through UPI and debit cards in NPCI Bharat Bill Payment Data.
