Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to remove her late husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s name from the Pataudi Trophy. This move has come as a disappointment to the family, especially considering Tiger Pataudi’s rich contribution to Indian cricket.

Sharmila Tagore Confirms BCCI Sent a Letter to Saif Ali Khan

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sharmila confirmed that BCCI had sent a formal letter to her son, Saif Ali Khan, informing him of the decision. She stated:
"BCCI can decide to carry forward Tiger's legacy or drop it. It is all up to them."

While diplomatic in tone, reports suggest that Sharmila is deeply saddened by this development.

The Legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan 'Tiger' Pataudi

Tiger Pataudi, son of Bhopal's last ruler Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was not just royalty but a cricketing icon. He captained the Indian cricket team and left a lasting impact on the sport. The Pataudi Trophy was established in 2007 by the BCCI to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first Test match between India and England, and to honor Pataudi's legacy.

Saif Ali Khan Followed Sharmila Tagore’s Footsteps Instead of Cricket

Unlike his father, Saif Ali Khan chose a path in cinema, following in the footsteps of his mother. In a past appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, Saif said:
"I didn’t have the discipline of a sportsman. I was more drawn to the glamour of films and knew I wouldn’t be able to meet the demands of cricket like my father did."

Legacy Debate: Public Reaction Awaits

As of now, BCCI has not issued a public statement explaining the rationale behind the decision. The removal of Tiger Pataudi’s name from a trophy meant to preserve cricket history has sparked a conversation about how India honors its sporting legends.
