Once again Australia thumped India in the final match of the series. As a result, the host team ended the five-match series with a score of 3-1. Furthermore, they ended their decade-long wait for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The match ended on January 5th, 2025 and it wrapped up in less than three days. Australia outplayed India decisively as both India’s batsmen and bowlers put up exceptional performances.

A hefty target has never stood in the way of Australia as they went on to win the trophy comfortably. 

The Sydney Cricket Ground buzzed with an infectious energy as Australia put up a stellar show. Due to their exceptional bowling attack, India was restrained to low scores, granting Australia a 162 run target, which they achieved thanks to Beau Webster. He struck 39 runs from just 34 balls, including six fours. Additionally, Travis Head added an extra 34 runs for his team, which comprised four boundaries.

Touchdown Australia. After trailing by 37 runs, Usman Khawaja was pivotal in their chasing efforts with a knock of 41 runs off 45 balls. In addition, he and Head built a decent partnership of 46 runs which got Australia on the cusp of victory.

India's Associate Growth Reach at Standstill

However, these odds looked precarious for India as Prasidh Krishna when they seemed to have gained momentum by getting two early wickets. Sam Konstas of India was able to get 22 runs while Marnus Labuschagne only managed 6 runs, Steve Smith managed to get 4 runs while batting , making it seem that they still had hopes. But Khawaja's growth rate and tie up with Head totally changed the odds greatly in favor of Australia. Mohammed Siraj got Khaawaja out for 41 runs,...but by then, the goal for the hosts seemed fairly easy to reach.

Head Webster stood firm at 58 runs for the fifth wicket which ensured that Australia crossed the finish line with ease. Indias chances were dire after Jasprit Bumrah wasn't able to play on Day 3 as she was still recovering from a session fiould warm up.

India’s Woes Persist in the Series

Many of the players did not do well individually during this series and thus India continued to have issues regarding their batting through out the series as well. India’s regular captain Rohit Sharma and RCB’s star batsman Virat Kohli had to recover from technical issues but also did not have good form. Despite scoring 3 ducks and a total of 391 runs, Indian top scorer Yashasvi Jaiswal did perform great, but in comparison to others he was far better. DL Rahul (276 runs) and Rishabh Pant (255 runs) followed this other rookie Nitish Kumar Reddy while working itself had less than wonderful totals during the series. Australia’s triumph within the series allowed them to qualify for a placement in the World Test Championship match where they will compete with South Africa in June 2025 in Lord’s stadium, London.
