Bansberia: Bhoomi puja to mark the beginning of the Kumbh Mela was performed at Saptarshi Ghat in Tribeni Sangam, Bansberia, in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, in remembrance of Bengali Kumbha’s Mela celebration which originated more than 700 years ago. The Kumbha Mela used to be celebrated last in the year 1298.

“Buddhists from all over the world will be able to take part in the ritual bathing exercise of taking a dip into the River Ganges,” said Samrat Ickeshwar, a Jadavpur University Later. The sacred bathing of a Yagya will begin on Magha Sankranti, February 11, 2016. This ancient practice is described in Pilgrimage in the Hindu Tradition: A Case Study of West Bengal (Oxford) authored by Canadian Alan Morinis and the Skanda Purana that flashed amongs avid King Priyavanta of Kashadwipa. Casting down to Shashtashar, he amassed his seven children Agnitra, Medhatithi, Vapusman, Jyotisman, Dutisman, Saban, Bhavya – each of whom performed grand Penances after attaining Siddhi.

They established ashramas in seven settlements around Tribeni Dham, known as Basudevpur, Banshberiya, Nityanandpur, Krishnapur, Devanandpur, Shivpur, and Baladghati, which together form Saptagram, once powerful trading hubs. Tribeni is one of the places considered to be holy for Hindus. After the Afghan invasion of Bengal, the bathing ritual was discontinued.

There is a distinction in the significance of Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj and Tribeni Sangam in Hooghly. The ancient Saraswati River is ephemeral in Prayagraj which meets the Ganges and Yamuna, hence the nickname ʻYaktabeni.ʼ In contrast, at Hooghly‘s Tribeni Yamuna is ephemeral and the Ganges and Saraswati have freed here, which is known as ‘Muktabeni.’

“Tribeni in Banshberia is an ancient pilgrimage spot. We have lost its uniqueness since subjugation backwards. This year the Kumbha Mela is being organized, like the last three years, to bring back and restore the ancient glory. The fair is going to take place from 11th to 13th February with Shahi Snan on 12th February. Approximately 300-400 saints are expected to flock the place. In Allahabad Maha Kumbh is being held in 30 kilometer area. We want this Kumbha to be held in every ghat on both banks of the Ganga," said Swami Saradatmananda from Ramakrishna Math, Baranagar.

"Astrologers say that on Sankranti day of the shift in Capricorn to Aquarius, the sun begins to set. It is on the day of royal bath. Kumbha Mela is celebrated here a month after Ganges Sagar. The last Kumbha bath was held in 1298. In 2022 we organized Anu Kumbha, which is also done in Prayag. We want to implement it in a larger way because the Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati has very high religious value.” said Kanchan Banerjee, chief director of the Bengali Kumbha Mela Management Committee.
