With the departure of KL Rahul, there were speculations around a change of captain for the franchise and now Rishabh Pant has emerged as the first choice ahead of Nicholas Pooran. “We are optimistic about participating in the IPL and Rishabh Pant will lead LSG in IPL 2025”, declared Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the franchise on an interview held on Monday the 20th of January, 2023. Also, Goenka declared that ' Pant was purchased for a whopping 27 crores rupees”.
Informing the members of the press, Goenka brought clarity by stating: “Pant will be assuming the captaincy of the LSG with immediate effect”. As evident, the true Rishabh Pant from the news covered by the media makes him the most expensive player in the Indian Premier League where all the players are auctioned off to different franchises.
With KL Rahul having parted ways with the Lucknow-based franchise before the mega auction in 2025, there were efforts made by the franchise owned by the RPSG Group to get a new captain. Nicholas Pooran was suggested, but there was no confirmation regarding him retaining the leadership position because he had been successful in the other leagues. The West Indies star turned out to be expensive for LSG, who shelled out an eye-popping amount of Rs. 21 crore in retention. The 2025 season, will mark Pant’s 4th consecutive season during which he will lead an IPL side, having been selected as the captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the season of 2021.
