Kolkata: During the trial, Sanjay Roy was found guilty of murdering and raping Doctor Intern, Tayha Mansoor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. A ruling that has received much condemnation and outraged a lot of people.
The case was presided by the additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das at he Sealdah court. He earlier announced a verdict of Roy’s live sentence that was meant to be held on Monday, saying that as he needed more time to think about each statement, he will be announcing them at 12:30 pm.
Furthermore, Roy was Also penalised for rape under section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita alongside assassination under section 66 and 103. The later being the crux for treason, holds life imprisonment and even capital punishment for such a crime.

At the time of the judgment hearing, Roy refuted the claims and replied by saying, “I have put on a rudraksha mala, and if I had committed such a crime, it would have broken. Even with this statement, he was taken out of the court room, under tight security measures, into the Presidency Correctional Home”.
The parents of the victim also thanked the court for the decision made. “The court has respected the faith which we had reposed in it,” they remarked.
A civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, Roy was taken into custody on August 10 2019, which was a day after a rise in complications led to a medic finding a woman’s dead body in the seminar room of the police hospital in the officers’ mess. In the beginning, the case was in the hands of the police who, in the first instance, were known as the Kolkata Police and later it was also called the Case . Countrywide Demonstrations
As a result of the heinous murder, there were protests all over India, one of which was facilitated by a junior doctor in Kolkata advocating for justice against the hiking violence in state hospitals, while civil society groups organized and led ’Reclaim the Night’ rallies in honor of Abhaya and Tilottama, so they would be remembered.
Moreover, the event turned into a huge political controversy with numerous opposition parties, including the BJP and CPI(M), rebuking the law and order situation within the state, led by Mamata Banerjee.
