The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions court recently convicted a woman of 24 years to death for the predatory murder of a 23-year-old male. In doing so Kurala has the youngest female death convictee and also the youngest woman on death row. In the courts ruling Greeshma was also found liable to pay a fine of 50 thousand rupees. Nirmalakumaran Nair, her uncle, has been convicted of the crime for the destruction of evidence. Unfortunately, her mother was freed on all charges due to lack of evidence.
The case goes back to 2022 when Greeshma served her boyfriend much of these tonics until he died due to organ failure. During the 11 days post consumption Sharon suffered organ failure and succumbed. In the courts defense Greeshma appealed for leniency but was rejected on all counts. Even for academic achievements to criminal background arguments were silenced by the courts due to severity of the crime. The prosecution has managed to argue that Greeshma has meticulously planned the murder due to familial pressures of wanting to get over her relationship with Sharon and wanting to marry an army officer. Noteworthy evidence consisted of the paraquat bottle that was obtained by her uncle, and her search history which provided insight regarding the crime she wanted to commit.
In response, Special Public Prosecutor V S Vineeth Kumar glorified the judgement by referring to it as an exemplary one. In his words, “During the period in which I was trying to argue in the court, I had a clear understanding that evidence would be accepted. I had argued that there is rarest of the rare case category in this and it should be awarded capital punishment.
